“Where there is style, there should also be substance,” says Christina Getachew, founder and CEO of Substance.

Getachew started her clothing line business in 2002, that she began selling online and through retail boutiques. “I really missed having the direct interaction with the customers who were buying my clothes to wear them,” explains Getachew.

She opened Substance March of 2006 to have direct customer contact with her customers. The name of her store came from her belief in a simple philosophy “where there is style, there should also be substance”.

With new shipments coming in two to three times each week, clothing is made from organic cotton and sustainable materials from lines that are carried and made all over the world. “While we have a large selection of apparel lines that are made in the USA, there are many organic and contemporary producers we carry that manufacture in India, China, and Peru,” says Getachew.

The store also sells classic, contemporary apparel and accessory lines that never go out of style and can be kept in your wardrobe for many seasons to come. “We design and produce a small collection of one-of-a-kind designs in a studio positioned right in the storefront,” explains Getachew. Visitors can witness the process and learn about the no-waste philosophy while Substance reuses fabric from previous seasons for upcoming collections.

“Our workshops give customers a taste of the design process while they enjoy a hands-on experience designing their own masterpiece,” explains Getachew.

Substance offers workshops for groups of women who can enjoy and spend time with family and friends while learning alteration, embellishment and printing techniques. During the workshop attendees get to learn the process of design and have the opportunity to design their very own tee shirt to take home.

Not only is this store environmentally friendly with their fashion and workshops but they also choose to support non-profit organizations each season. They have focused on improvements in public school education for children in the United States. “We make our donations to Donorschoose.org so that we can target local underserved school districts and classrooms in need,” explains Getachew.

In the coming years, Substance will be franchising their storefronts and will be seen in other cities in the United States. The store is located at 783 North High Street in the heart of the Short North.
