A Piece of the Farm Visits the Big City

Farm Days- SOCIAL

Teach your kids a little bit about farming and the rural lifestyle at COSI’s upcoming event, Farm Days. This annual event gives all ages the chance to experience the potentially unseen side of American life that feeds and supports our urban and suburban lifestyles.

COSI’s first Farm Days event was held in 2005. “Farms Days started with a conversation between COSI’s leadership and the Franklin County Farm Bureau,” says Jaclyn Reynolds, COSI’s Public Relations and Social Media Manager. According to Reynolds, the Franklin County Farm Bureau wanted to explore different ways of educating people about farming’s importance to the community, as well as where everyone’s food is grown. The Farm Bureau had a particular interest in creating a hands-on experience for visitors to investigate. COSI proved to be the perfect venue for this type of event, and consequently, Farm Days was born.

For the event, COSI will feature giant farming equipment such as a four-wheel-drive tractor and antique tractors. Visitors will have the chance to explore and sit inside the equipment, allowing them to imagine what the experience of working on a farm might be like. Other activities include a tractor pedal course in addition to the opportunity to grow a seed necklace and see a baby chick hatch.

Visitors can also take part in the unique experience of milking a cow with the help of Daisy, COSI’s fiberglass cow. “Last year we had a bee beard demonstration, sheep shearing and a beehive, but activities may not be the same from year-to-year,” adds Reynolds. “The goal of Farm Days is to teach people about raising crops and livestock.”

This year, Farm Days will take place from August 14 to August 18. The event will surely be enjoyable for all ages. “Farm Days at COSI brings the farm to the city,” says Reynolds. “We will have fun demonstrations and learn about livestock, huge farm equipment and how farming is an important industry here in Ohio.” Farm Days will take place outside on COSI’s West Ramp, and is included with the regular admission fee for COSI.

In the next few months, COSI will be offering more exciting events that kids will love. On September 21, the exhibit Curious GeorgeTM: Let’s Get Curious opens and will feature special Curious George appearances throughout the fall. On September 28, COSI will host Get Active Play Day, an event geared toward promoting active outdoor play for kids. Additionally, the last Friday of every month is Family Friday Night, which gives families discounted admission to COSI and includes a movie in the Extreme Screen Theater.
