Chic Spotlight: TL Yarn Crafts

Cbus Chic: What is TL Yarn Crafts?
Toni Lipsey, Founder of TL Yarn Crafts: TL Yarn Crafts is an Ohio based fiber arts studio for the modern girl. My collection of crochet accessories, patterns, and maker gifts is curated to inspire thoughtful creativity and compliment your effortless style. Aside from the items in my shop, I also offer easy to follow crochet instruction through my blog and YouTube channel.

Cbus Chic: What’s the inspiration behind it?
Lipsey: TL Yarn Crafts was created to engage with and celebrate the makers of the fiber arts movement. With the help of social media, TL Yarn Crafts aims to reinforce that we all have creative spirits and can make beautiful things.

Cbus Chic: Who’s behind it?
Lipsey: TL Yarn Crafts is a one woman show, run by me – Toni Lipsey. A Columbus resident by way of Detroit, I started TLYC in 2013 after deciding that my family had more than enough handmade hats. The business started as just a retail venture until I came to understand that true success came from building meaningful relationships. I adjusted my business to allow for more educational workshops and resources for handmade business owners. At present, TL Yarn Crafts aims to educate and inspire the next generation of successful creative entrepreneurs.

Cbus Chic: What types of products do you make?
Lipsey: TL Yarn Crafts is best known for well-written crochet patterns. Designs range from accessories to garments and even small dolls. All patterns are available on, Ravelry (Toni Lipsey), and Etsy. Other products include maker gifts, like funny coffee mugs and hand-punched pin back buttons, as well as a small selection of ready-to-ship accessories.

Cbus Chic: Can you tell us more about the PDFs you sell for makers? What inspired you to offer DIY patterns?
Lipsey: When I first launched my Etsy shop, I purchased patterns from designers that I respected and admired. But I had an idea in mind for the perfect slouchy beanie. I wanted it textured with a wide brim and a giant pom pom. I scoured my normal pattern platforms and didn’t find anything to meet my dream of the perfect beanie. So I decided it was time to make it. I spent nearly two months perfecting the design but the Mega Pom Beanie was eventually born. I’ve sold hundreds of copies of the pattern since I launched it in 2015. The process of creating something that didn’t exist, then sharing that with other makers was exhilarating and I’ve been designing ever since. To date, I have designed 23 patterns and counting. I’m hoping to branch out into more colorful and complicated patterns in 2018.

Cbus Chic: Can you give us price points?
Lipsey: Now that I mainly do designing, my prices sit firmly at $5, regardless of the difficulty of time it’s taken to produce the pattern. I want my patterns to feel accessible to all makers, I’ve tried my best to prevent cost from being a barrier.

Cbus Chic: What makes TL Yarn Crafts unique?
Lipsey: TL Yarn Crafts is unique because it focus is on beauty and creativity instead of making a dollar. Crocheters who purchase my pattern know ME, who I am and what I am about, independent of my online shop or my business. They connect with who I am as a person and a maker. They trust me and see me as a friend in the maker industry. They know that they are getting a quality pattern and the personal touch needed to make something beautiful.

Cbus Chic: Is there anything new on the horizon for TL Yarn Crafts in 2018?
Lipsey: I’m always cooking up new things! A few confirmed project include expanding on my maker gifts, including more coffee mug designs and some apparel, and online start-to-finish crochet workshops. While most of my patterns are beginner-friendly, a few could do with some additional instruction. I’ll be making videos for a few of my signature designs that makers can follow along with to ensure that their finished product is picture perfect. I’ve also just started a blog – TLYCBlog, that I’m super pumped about.

Cbus Chic: Where can readers go to learn more and follow along?
Lipsey: The TL Yarn Crafts party is always on Instagram. Find all of my patterns and maker gifts at, and join me on my blogging journey at
