Crafting A Legacy

Amber RunyonAmber Runyon isn’t a stranger to international travel. The nurse travels to different countries with medical teams, but an encounter with a young girl during trip to Ethiopia stuck with Runyon. While in Ethiopia, an orphan street girl named Mulu walked right up to Runyon.

“The moment she walked up to me and slipped her little hand inside of mine, I looked into her big brown eyes and knew in some way she belonged to me and I belonged to her,” Runyon recalls.

As Runyon walked around, she noticed there were many children and pregnant women. “I then realized that the women were pregnant because the only way most of them knew how to provide for their candle was to sell their bodies,” she says.

The experience changed Runyon, and after coming home to Columbus, she knew she had to take actions. She founded Legacy and Legacy Candle Co., a social enterprise working to redeem, restore, empower, and equip those affected by human trafficking.

Legacy and Legacy Candle Co. sells items crafted by communities of women, as well as soy candles. And all the profits from the artisanal products go back to Legacy’s mission – both domestically and internationally.

Legacy - Jewelry Legacy works with 16 Ethiopian women on building a community through skills training where they make beads, metal jewelry, and hand carved wooden crosses and figurines. Locally, Legacy Candle Co. is working on employing women who have been trafficked to pour and sell their soy candles in a variety of marketplaces.

Emily Huber of Legacy also shares with Cbus Chis some of what they’ve been up to recently. She tells us that Amber returned from Ethiopia with a wide variety of new jewelry products.  And while Legacy still carries their very popular gold bangles, they’ve added some mixed metal necklaces in copper, silver, and gold.

“Copper seems to be an upcoming trend for this season and we wanted to be a part of it!” Huber says.

Lemongrass - Legacy CandleLegacy Candle Co. also has some new fresh scents for spring and summer like Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, and Amazing Grace. Huber explains that, “Lemongrass has citrus notes throughout while Eucalyptus is much more herb based.  Amazing Grace is a light floral scent.”

For those already familiar with Legacy’s scents, don’t worry. They also carry their signature fresh scent Sea Salt & Rosemary year round.
