LOCAL: Who to Know and Where to Go

Short shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits are probably the last thing on every woman’s mind right now, especially with all of the ice, snow, and negative temperatures we’ve been experiencing in Ohio lately. While it doesn’t seem like it now, summer IS coming and is less than 5 months away, so that makes now the perfect time to start getting in shape in preparation for bathing suit season.

Deciding to get fit is a big commitment and staying fit is even more challenging, especially for those of us with jobs, families, and social lives that keep us busy. Picking out a gym or fitness center is the easy part, right? Wrong!

I admittedly don’t know my way around a gym, having no clue how any of the machines work, how much weight I should be attempting, or how many repetitions I should be doing. Not to mention how to make sure I am getting a well-rounded workout…I need help!

One of the best ways to ensure you are on the right path to reaching your fitness goals is to think LOCAL. Larger “big name” gyms might seem convenient but there are so many benefits to smaller locally owned gyms and fitness centers that you should consider. Smaller gyms have less members which means that you will receive a more personal experience, more assistance from staff, and more time with equipment, and locally owned gyms are almost always more affordable, the larger chain gyms often have enrollment fees and high cancellation fees in addition to their monthly membership rates.

There is nothing like the motivation and camaraderie that comes from group workout sessions or classes, or the benefits you receive from working with a personal trainer that can keep you accountable and tailor workouts to you, your body type, and personal goals. I’ve put together a list of some great local gyms, yoga studios, and trainers in Columbus. When it comes to getting fit, they’ve got your back (and abs, legs, and chest too depending on your fitness plan)!

Go Fitness – Go Fitness is a great LOCAL gym, they focus on providing guidance, results, and success with a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. Every membership includes monthly personal training and they even offer free classes every day that are included in the cost of your membership.

Sign up for coaching or group fitness classes and get ready to sweat! You will feel the effects of this intense workout the next day.

Pilger’s Old Skool Fight Sports & Fitness Academy – Pilger’s offers full body boxing boot camp classes that help with weight loss and toning. Workouts consist of jumping rope, body-weight conditioning exercises, heavy bag punch drills, sled pushes, and abdominal core exercises.

O Hi Yoga – If fast paced high intensity cardio workouts aren’t your thing, try yoga. There is a long list of physical, mental, and spiritual benefits that can be gained from doing yoga. Yoga can change your physical and mental capacity quickly, while preparing the mind and body for long term health. Check out O Hi Yoga, a brand new studio just east of downtown Columbus in historic Olde Towne East. O Hi Yoga is offering an introductory rate for new students with classes priced at 3 for $25.00.
