Photo Kitchen, Bite-Sized Book of Bite-Sized Recipes
Catherine Murray is the owner of Photo Kitchen, a full service photography business specializing in food, product and lifestyle imagery for a variety of commercial brands.
Murray’s company brings their clients food photos that are, as her slogan says: good enough to eat.
Thinking back, Murray recalls how her favorite memories growing up are all in the kitchen. She also worked at a restaurant for seven years before switching to photography in 2004.
“Photographers don’t stray far from their roots when it comes to what they choose to specialize in,” she says. And Photo Kitchen is the combination of her two favorite things: food and photos.
Murray explains that, “food is the greatest connector. I could walk up to any stranger and have an endless conversation about food. Food is what motivates me to get up every morning! What great things will I eat today?”
But it’s not just those conversation connections that have been the great part of growing Photo Kitchen. Murray has so many great moments and milestones. Like her first billboard, which was an 80 ft. sausage in the middle of downtown Columbus for Schmidt’s. Also, seeing the photography credit line on her first cookbook project, The Spark Solution, was another huge milestone. She also loved shooting 12 beautiful Edible Columbus magazine covers.
“But my very favorite memories are the funny, crazy moments this business dishes out daily, like making food dance for an illustrated gif and spending five days shopping to find the perfect punch bowl. Or using tweezers to move pieces of parsley by the millimeter and having so many failed attempts at making aioli from scratch that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to laugh or cry. I mostly laughed,” Murray adds.
Murray also put together another food-based project, the Bite-Sized Book of Bite-Sized Recipes. The cookbook started as an idea for a tiny magazine promo piece in 2012. And she thought: why not make a tiny cookbook about tiny food?
So Murray put together the Bite-Sized Book of Bite-Sized Recipes as a miniature cookbook that fits in the palm of your hand at just under 2 inches tall. Inside its tiny pages are 20 fun, kid-friendly, easy to make bite-sized recipes, like Mighty Mini Manicotti, Tiny Taco Salads and Matchstick S’Mores. Each mini cookbook comes with a magnifying glass and a digital PDF ebook download to easily read the recipes when you’re ready to cook.
“All the best moments are born of little things. Like when my sister and I were little and created something called Trail Mix Cookies while snorting milk and laughing so hard it hurt. The tiny cookbook is an excuse to do something fun and whimsical, to remember what it was like when life was less busy. It’s a bite-sized reminder that the little things are the things that matter,” Murray says.
