Staying Chic in the City

While Columbus is emerging as an “unlikely fashion hub,” there is a likely suspect: CMH Fashion Week.

The initiative is headed up by Thomas McClure, who started Fashion Week Columbus in 2010. He later changed the name later to CMH Fashion Week in 2012 after broadening its mission and restructuring the board.

Today, CMH Fashion Week is one of the largest fashion movements in the Midwest recognizing local designers, talent, and businesses. Plus, being a non-profit organization, they also have a mission to fund a scholarship every year for an emerging designer from the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD).

Thomas McClure, founder of CMH Fashion Week.

“Columbus is home to several national and international fashion retailers,” says McClure. Formerly a model and actor, as well as the director of a local talent agency, McClure knew the hotbed of haute couture talent in the region and was confident Columbus needed its own fashion week.

This year, the show will feature a Chicago designer from last year, Eugene Frimpong as well as local designers such as Dirty Laser, Genoveva Christoff and Lubna Najjar. According to McClure, there will be many different styles and trends seen on this years runway. “We have 14 designers this year and you’re going to see everything from lace to comic book stripes,” he adds.

The official CMH Fashion Week takes place October 6-12. There will be a schedule of events each day to satisfy anyone’s style sweet tooth. Visit the Short North Arts District on October 5 for October Gallery Hop in which CMH Fashion week will be setting up a fashion exhibit at the corner of Warren and High Streets in the Bollinger Tower Courtyard. Start off the first day of Fashion Week on October 6 with High Fashion Tea, an event that gives a preview of Fashion Week during some elegant English afternoon tea. The event will take place at the Columbus Museum of Art starting at 1pm and tickets are $35 to attend. An event open to the public is the Human Rights Federal Club Fashion Show that will feature high street denim on models strutting the runway. Enjoy this event October 7 from 6-9pm at the Garage Downtown on Long Street. The Heyman Talent Agency Industry Mixer will give visitors a chance to mingle with models, designers, photographers, makeup artists and hair stylists on October 8. Worthington Jewelers Bubbles and Baubles will be held on October 9 and October 10 will give everyone a chance to meet Nary Manivong.

Insightly_InStoryAdIf wedding bells are ringing in the near future, make sure to mark your calendars for October 11. “This will be the first year we’ve had a Bridal Runway Show,” says McClure. Featuring high-end bridal designers and boutiques, the bridal show will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton on Capital Square. This one-of-a-kind bridal show event starts at 6pm and tickets are $15 to attend.

“To top it all off, Columbus native, now well known in New York, Nary Manivong will be headlining the Finale Runway Show,” explains McClure. He has been featured in his documentary, “Dressed” and “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s.” The Finale Runway show will have the city skyline and river in close view, as it will take place at Genoa Park. “The city will be shining down on us,” says McClure. The event starts at 7pm and tickets are $65. Proceeding will be an after party at Hollywood Casino Columbus.
