Bride-to-be: You Got the Ring…Now What?

Congratulations! You’re engaged. Now that you have that ring sitting on your (hopefully polished) ring finger, what’s next? First, don’t freak out. Okay, freak out – you’re engaged! Pour a glass of wine and dish with your girlfriends, because he’s yours forever and you’re about to have one heck of a party.

After your freak-out session that includes one too many perfectly filtered Instagram photos of your ring, let’s get down to business. It’s likely that right after you said “YES!” your head immediately began spinning with thoughts of dresses, venues, colors, flowers, invitations, guest lists and honeymoon destinations. But, slow down crazy, slow down.

Most girls want to jump immediately into dress shopping, but there are a few important details you need to have finalized before saying “Yes to the Dress!” These details will help guide you to the perfect dress that’s just right for your wedding.

Your date: Believe it or not, some gals jump right to the dress before even knowing their date! Your date is important because depending on the time of year you are getting married will have a huge impact on the type of dress you should consider. You might have always dreamed of a satin gown, but is that really practical in the middle of July? Satin gowns are typically best for a fall to early spring wedding. Lightweight fabrics such as silk, organza, tulle and chiffon are more appropriate for a hot summer wedding.

Your venue: You guessed it – your venue, just like your wedding date, should influence the type of dress you consider. Again, you might have always dreamed of a ball gown, but who wants to sprinkle the sand out of a ball gown after a beach wedding? Certainly not your Maid of Honor! Knowing your venue helps your bridal consultant guide you to the dress that will match the style of your location as well as a dress that will allow you to enjoy the environment you are in.

Your colors: Typically, girls love to pair accessories with their gown that will complement the colors of their wedding. If peach is one of your colors, a peach sash around your gown can add a classy and elegant touch to your entire look. Also, given there are many shades of gowns to choose from, you want to choose a shade that is going to complement the overall colors of your wedding.

CarCacheISAYour budget: Above all, know your budget and understand just how much wiggle room you have before your first appointment. The most heartbreaking thing I see in my job is watching a girl fall in love with a dress then her realizing it’s out of her price range. Knowing exactly how much you have to spend before shopping will help keep you on track and allow you to only see what you can afford. It’s possible to find your perfect dress at any price point. Your bridal consultant will work with you to make it work; and keep in mind that many dresses can be altered to reduce the price.

Beginning the wedding dress shopping process can be overwhelming and challenging. But, it doesn’t have to be. Decide on these facts first then go from there!
