Jumping for Joy at Gym Skills

Gym Skills Visionary and Founder, Kenny Crump, started the company in 2005 as a mobile gym. They traveled around the Columbus area teaching basic gymnastics and tumbling to schools and childcare centers. In 2008, as the program began to grow, they were able to open their first gym in Gahanna, through a partnership with a fellow cheerleading coach and friend.

This summer, Gym Skills opened the Kids Lifestyle Center: a 15,000 sqft building which tripled the size of their previous Gahanna location. The new location features 10 trampolines, a foam pit, and all the men’s and woman’s gymnastics apparatus.

“The business was started with the mindset of growing to a national level. We plan to franchise our model in the near future and open more locations in other cities,” explains Kara Shaffer, social media coordinator and head coach for Gym Skills’s woman’s competitive team: Gym Skills Elite.

Shaffer started coaching in 2014 through the Gym Skills recreational and mobile gym program. “I have a strong passion for working with children, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and watching all the athletes progress through gymnastics, tumbling, and fitness!” she shares.

For Shaffer, “there is no other sport like gymnastics. It teaches girls of all ages discipline, determination, respect, dedication, and teamwork! It also educates that with hard work and fearless attitude, anything is possible!” Adding that Gym Skills has been a huge impact on her life and how it’s been amazing to watch the program grow.

At Gym Skills, kids can enjoy everything from gymnastics, tumbling, ninja warrior, to other children’s fitness activities through two types of mediums: the mobile gym and main gym location.

Gym Skills wants to emphasize that incorporating a healthy diet is also a key contributor to overall health, so they have a smoothie bar right at the gym. “We offer healthy snack and drink options for everyone to enjoy before or after class,” says Shaffer.

Programming at Gym Skills offers a variety of classes for children ages 16 months – 18 years. And they’ve recently expanded class offerings from more than just gymnastics and tumbling. “We now offer hip-hop, ninja warrior, and adult fitness classes,” Shaffer adds.

They’re kicking off their adult gymnastics-based fitness class (Elite Bodies Fitness) led by head competition coach, Coach Kara, this month. And they’ll have Open Gym every Tuesday and Friday morning from 9:30AM-12:PM, and Friday evenings from 7-9PM, plus a Tumbling Clinic every first Saturday of the month from 12:30-2PM.

And Parents’ Night Out every second Saturday of the month from 5-8PM. “Parents can drop children off at the gym (ages 5+) for a night full of games, obstacle courses, trampoline time, pizza, a craft, and TONS of fun,” promises Shaffer.

Currently, can you find Gym Skills’s gyms and mobile gyms in Columbus and Cincinnati. They also offer Birthday Parties, Winter/Summer Camps, Tumbling Clinics, Open Gyms, and the afore-mentioned Parent’s Night Out Events.
