Simplified Morning Beauty Routine

As you may know, I’ve been on the journey to simplify for about a year. One thing that I’ve truly gained out of this path is a morning routine. I went from waking up moments before I have to leave and rushing around, to a serene morning filled with music, meditation, and of course simplified makeup.

If you are anything like me, getting ready in the morning was a task I used to dread.

Mainly because I would rather spend my mornings in quiet reflection and intention setting, as opposed to listening to the incessant hum of a hair dryer or the daily battle with the annoying eye lash curler. On the other hand, getting dressed up and feeling good about how I look does wonders for my productivity and sets a tone for the rest of the day.

I’ll admit, I’ve been sucked into the black hole that’s skincare and makeup on YouTube and Pinterest. I’ve spent entire days (yes, entire days) down that rabbit hole of Korean Skincare. And as lovely and amazing as it sounds … ain’t nobody got time for that. Trust me, I’ve bought and tried.

So I took my minimalistic lifestyle and applied it to my morning beauty routine. Now, I could talk for days about all the other aspects of my morning, but for the purpose of “saving time,” I’ll just review some helpful tips to a Korean inspired, but simplified morning beauty routine. (I’ll be putting together a simplified morning routine blog post soon! And if you want the down low on the famous Korean Skincare Routine, check out Soko Glam for the full 10-step routine).

#1 – Stop Being Lazy & Take Your Makeup Off The Night Before

I won’t even go over what you should have done the night before. Yes, I’m talking about taking off your makeup. I know, I know… you have heard it all before. But really, can you answer honestly: did you take your makeup off last night? Well, if you didn’t, then makeup wipes are your step number one.

*For the overachievers: facial cloths

A few years ago, I was invited to this party of sorts: “come learn about environmentally safe products for you and your home.”  When I got the invitation, I did a major eye roll. Just another one of those pyramid schemes, I imagined. But there was free food, so of course I went.

And low and behold, my world was turned upside down.  Norwex products are dedicated to helping you turn your home into a “safe haven.” Now, for the purpose of this article, I won’t go into detail about their products for the home (check out my favorites here).

But the ONE THING I went home with that evening was their Body Cloths. These little babies do EVERYTHING! They remove makeup and they cleanse your skin with no harsh chemicals (for those of you that use face cleansers, make sure you are using something with a Ph of 5.5 or less). All you do is add water to these handy dandy cloths and wipe your face.

Make sure you hit up Columbus, native Carrie Grome for all things Norwex.

*Helpful Tip: I use warm water on my cloths first thing in the morning. It cleanses my skin and wakes me up. Added bonus, it helps remove those disgusting globs of “who knows what” in the corner of your eyes.

#2 – Son and Park Beauty Water

Now, under the Korean Skincare routine, the highly accepted methodology is to double cleanse, exfoliate, then tone. We’ve already cleansed once with the facial cloths, and … are you ready for it? I am seriously about to blow your mind. Son and Park’s Beauty Water is God’s gift to the Earth. It cleanses, exfoliates, and tones, all in one product!

That’s three steps in one. This product is my HOLY GRAIL of products. And I don’t use that term lightly. Not only is it a 3 in 1, it smells amazing and leaves your skin feeling amazingly fresh! Plus, anything that’s leftover on your face is immediately wiped away with one swipe of the Beauty Water.

*Helpful Hint:  I use exfoliating cotton pads (like the ones found here). One side is your gentle normal pad, and the opposite side is the exfoliator. On days that I feel my skin needs that extra exfoliation, I use the rougher side.

#3 – Moisture Kick

The next couple steps in the Korean Skincare routine are all about treating your skin the way it deserves to be treated. With serums, ampoules, essences, and a bunch of other products I’ve never heard of before. After one of my many retreats down the Korean Skincare black hole, I came back with a product that I can no longer live without.

It’s the MISSHA Time Revolution First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist. I use this product after the Beauty Water for an extra boost of moisture. This added step to my skincare routine is not only to repair dry skin, but this little baby is all about anti-aging.

As I’m in my late 20’s, anti-aging is no longer something I worry about in the future. I added this necessary step so botox doesn’t become a monthly appointment. As a side note, I recently was asked where I was going to college in the fall, so … yeah.

But on days when I’m running behind, I spray my face with La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water instead. It’s a quicker moisture kick-in-the-pants.

#4 – Eye Cream

Do I really need to explain the importance of this step? All I will say is … wrinkles. Two of my favorite products are the Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C Eye Roll-On and the Juice Beauty Smoothing Eye Concentrate

#5 – Dual Acting Sunscreen

We all know that sunscreen is probably the most important aspect of our skincare arsenal. When I used to use a 10 step Korean Skincare routine, I’d use a moisturizer and a sunscreen (layering isn’t just to look cute in the fall).

But I found that it left my skin feeling sticky and would jump from “fresh AF” to “haven’t showered in a few weeks” in a matter of hours. So, I cut down one more step and went with a moisturizing sunscreen.

#6 – Build A Strong Foundation … But Not With Foundation

I’ve found the best next step in a simplified beauty routine is using a primer. I absolutely love this product. Most days, I just put on a primer and walk out the door. These magic creations fill in fine lines and visible pores, giving that smooth baby’s butt look. Starting with a primer will seriously change your whole face.

Some of my personal drug store favorites are Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser and NYX Pore Filler.  If you want to splurge a little you have to check out Tarte Pore Mattifying Primer

*Helpful Hint:  Apply your pore filler or primer under your raccoon eyes to help cover up those pesky little wrinkles. Follow it up with Tony Moly Panda’s Dream So Cool Eye Stick for that super tingly wake up call!

#7 – Your Foundations Got A Foundation

Here is the step for foundation. Now, I’m not gonna go into all of the types of foundation because I honestly believe that foundation is a completely personal preference. Whether you like full coverage or light coverage, liquid or powder, matte or dewy is something only you can decide for yourself. But I do have a few of my favorites.

During the summer months I typically only use a BB Cream. Currently, I’m using Covergirl CG Smoothers BB Cream. I love it. Very light coverage, but still covers up those unwanted spots or less than perfect imperfections.

During the colder months, I’ll opt for a more tactical solution. This is where another HOLY GRAIL product comes in. Son and Park’s Glow Ring Foundation. This little baby has a moisture essence in the center, is travel friendly, and has a brush attached to the end. Very compact and screams simplicity.

Another beautiful part about this product is the company philosophy. Son and Park believe in taking care of your skin first and makeup second. The stick foundation is packed with all the gooey goodness a foundation should have. Downsides: they ONLY come in two shades (as this is a Korean Makeup Line), so for all of my darker complexion beauties, this will not work for you.

#8 – Kiss Your Blush Goodbye

First off, I’d like to point out the awesome pun in this step’s title (you’ll see why). My next simplified beauty step is blush … AND… lip. I stumbled across this duo recently and could not be more in love.

I’m currently obsessing over the Pixi by Petra MultiBalm. The formula is creamy enough to moisturize your lips and blends very well on the face.

Added Bonus: my makeup bag got significantly smaller.

#9 – Mascara And Go

Obviously, most days I skip steps six, seven, & eight, and head straight to mascara. Adding a little length and volume to those tired, sunken eyes gives the world the impression you have it all together, even though we all know we’re one wrong coffee away from a meltdown.

*ProTip:  If you want to cut down your morning routine even more, hit up The Waxxpot for a Lash Lift. No mascara needed and these lifts last between 3-5 weeks!

*Added Bonus: no more fussing with that pesky little eyelash curler.

Nervous breakdown, I mean Spiritual awakening aside (thanks Brene Brown for that reframing), this simplified beauty routine has not only saved me precious serenity moments in the morning, but time, money, and cabinet space.

As a girl trying to minimize and still look fabulous, I couldn’t ask for a better routine. I’m sure this will evolve and I’ll find more products that I adore (and of course I’ll share with you) as I inevitably get sucked back into the skincare/makeup void.

For now, this girl on the go has finally found a simplified routine that works.
