A HIIT Workout

Our Local Editor spent 60 minutes sweating it out during a whole body workout at Studio Torch. After, she wanted to learn more about the newly opened fitness spot.

So, Cbus Chic decided to chat with the owners – Jon Lorenz and Tom Obrien – to find out what makes Studio Torch a HIIT.

Cbus Chic: Tell us a little about yourselves

Jon Lorenz: My name is Jon Lorenz. My partner, Tom Obrien and I are the founders of StudioTorch. We both grew up in Columbus and went to Bishop Watterson High School, and together we moved onto Ohio State to pursue different career paths.

In 2013, I graduated with a degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Finance. Beyond the classroom, I was a member of the varsity football team at Ohio State under Coach Tressel & Coach Fickell, successfully winning two Big Ten Championships, the 2009 Rose Bowl, and the 2010 Sugar Bowl. After graduation, I moved to Chicago to work in real estate finance where I also developed a passion for high intensity training.

Beyond this passion, I love traveling, skiing, yoga, cooking, trying new restaurants.

Tom Obrien: I graduated from Ohio State in 2014 after completing the Wolstein Scholars Entrepreneurial program at the Fisher College of Business.  Throughout college and beyond, I worked for a local technology company, DOmedia, helping them grow their customer base in a meaningful way.

During that time I developed a passion for working with people and helping to grow small businesses. In my spare time I like to indulge in snowboarding, fitness, fundraising.

Cbus Chic: What is Studio Torch?

Lorenz: The idea of StudioTorch was created when Tom and I were traveling together in February of 2016. I was living in Chicago, Tom in Columbus. We recognized that there was an opportunity for us to bring a dedicated boutique HIIT training studio to Columbus.

We then decided to both leave our corporate jobs and pursue this idea that at the time didn’t have a name. We then worked to create a product that’ll provide both routine and intensity to individuals at all fitness levels.

Cbus Chic: What makes StudioTorch unique?

Obrien: StudioTorch utilizes a wide variety of both formats and equipment during class. Formats include Tabata, Circuits, AMRAPs, Time-Caps, and more.

Sessions in our brand new studio space will include a mix of dumbbells, barbells, kettles, treadmills, rowing machines, bands, med balls, boxes, and much more.

Additionally, we have a different focus each day to ensure that you are getting a comprehensive training routine.

Cbus Chic: What has been the most exciting part of opening StudioTorch?

Lorenz: It’s amazing the amount of positive feedback we’ve received, especially regarding the workout itself. When you put all of your time and energy into bringing an idea to life and see that people truly love it, it’s a great feeling.

We’ve also really enjoyed getting to know our clients. We regularly do classes alongside them, so it’s fun to keep each other motivated as well as watch our instructors thrive in their new roles.

Cbus Chic: What kind of classes does Studio Torch offer?

Obrien: Each day, we offer classes as early as 6:15 AM and as late as 6:45 PM. Each workout is 60 minutes long with the exception of our lunchtime express workout, and the instructors will always demonstrate moves for that workout prior to warm-up. Here’s a glimpse at what our weekly schedule looks like:

Cbus Chic: Are you running any specials?

Obrien: We currently have two special memberships that won’t be available for much longer. We offer a Founders Unlimited membership for the first 50 people to sign up. This membership is 20% off our normal unlimited membership price of $149, and is good for as long as the client maintains membership.

We also offer a Couples Founders Unlimited membership. This works out to  $220/month per couple and is good for as long as couple maintains membership!

Cbus Chic: Does Studio Torch have any events coming up?

Obrien: We have two events coming up in the near future. From 5-9 PM this Saturday (12/9), we’ll be attending the Grandview Hop. During the Hop, a half-mile stretch of Grandview Avenue will be filled with pop-up vendors like ourselves, live music, local shopping and yummy food.

We’ll also be at A Taste of Fitness in January 2018. Thanks to The Beauty Boost, we’ll get the opportunity to introduce our studio to hundreds of individuals. This event will be held at the Vue in The Brewery District the morning of January 28th, and you can sign-up here.

We’re also in the process of developing a fitness challenge for the New Year that we’re hoping will ignite some friendly competition among our clients.
